Sony kiest voor IBM Power7 CPU (PlayStation 4)

Na eerdere berichtgeving over de nieuwe GPU voor de PlayStation 4 wordt nu verteld dat Sony de IBM Power 7 CPU heeft gekozen voor de next generation console de PlayStation 4.
Verdere berichtgeving in het Engels, het is een gerucht en nog niet bevestigt door Sony.
“We can officially reveal in this world exclusive that SCEI has officially chosen IBM’s currently in development POWER7 architecture for it’s PlayStation 4 system, currently scheduled for a 2012 worldwide release.
IBM shall debut POWER7 for the server market in the summer of 2010. The PlayStation 4 shall use a cost effective version of the architecture custom designed for Sony’s specific needs.
The only information FGNOnline currently has available regarding specifications and performance is that the PS4 implementation of the chip shall use 6-8 cores, 24-32MB shared L3 Cache, Quad threading per core, and a double precision performance approaching 200GFLOPS.
The CELL chip which powers the PS3 is capable of 15 double precision GFLOPS. This would give the PS4 a performance leap of over 10 fold over it’s predecessor.
Interestingly, the primary reason IBM cancelled development on the CELL based PoweXcell 8i is because of SCEI’s change of stance. The company wanted to move away from the exotic architecture employed for the PS3 to a more traditional architecture favored by third party developers.
As displayed by it’s choice of processors, the server based POWER7 and the TBDR based PowerVR 6, SCEI once again has sights set for performance leadership in the next round.”

Eigenlijk ook wel logisch omdat de cell processor op een dood spoor zit.

Ik wil eerst nog ff van mijn 2e ps3 genieten voordat ik weer als eerste deze haal
er staat iig dat hij voor 2012 een wereldwijde release te wachten staat

Volgens een film die ik pas gezien heb in de bios gebeurt er iets héél anders in 2012

2012 lijkt wel vroeg maar ik kan me voorstellen dat Sony weer niet als laatste de next gen wilt binnen komen.

ja, ze bedoelen dat de ps4 10x betere prestaties gaat leveren dan zijn predecessor..ofterwijl..voorganger..ofterwijl ps3..

Mooi artikel hoor! Erg fijn om dit soort dingen in de gaten te houden. Nu ervoor zorgen dan Microsoft NIET mee gaat liften, zoals ze eigenlijk wel met de PowerPC-cpu gedaan hebben.

@Ronald: De naam staat alleen in de Engelse quote en dan ook niet als klikbare link. Veel sites hebben jullie bericht overgenomen, maar jullie zijn niet de oorspronkelijke bron. Ik vind dat FGNonline credits verdient hiervoor.
Dit is nu het mooie van internet.. niemand maar ook niemand begrijpt wat er staat maar het wordt klakkeloos door alle game sites wereldwijd overgenomen. Best humor..

Als de nieuwe PS4 in 2012 uitkomt dan zeg ik kom maar op! Ik heb er zin in en vind het dan ook echt niet te vroeg.
De PS3 is dan 4 a 5 jaar uit dus dan is het een mooie tijd voor een nieuwe console.
